            This is a permanent full-time position working 35 hours per week.

Purpose:

Reporting to the Director, Waste Management and Road Operations, this position is responsible for leading staff in the direction and execution of landfill operations and related programs.

 

Preferred Background:

The successful candidate must have post-secondary education Civil or Environmental Engineering and be licensed with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) or possess Certification with Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) as a Certified Technologist (CET). Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) certification is preferred.  A minimum of seven years of experience in landfill operations is required, along with demonstrated expertise waste management engineering. The successful candidate must be a dynamic team leader with a minimum of five years’ supervisory experience, with excellent communication skills and experience in performance management, problem solving, collaboration, and critical decision making.  Excellent judgment and stakeholder management skills are essential for interactions with senior management, public officials, and external agencies.  Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Environmental Protection Act is required. The individual must have experience with business technology solutions including Microsoft Office Suite, SAP, and time/project management applications and experience with developing and managing budgets. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

 

Duties:

·         Lead a diverse team of technical professionals.  Responsible for managing recruitment, time and attendance, performance and recognition, professional development, coaching, mentoring, customer service and health and safety.

·         Ensure active and closed disposal sites operate in accordance with the terms and conditions of all applicable agreements, regulations and certificates of approval

·         Lead and coordinate the implementation of new waste management initiatives, programs and operational plans relating to strategic objectives

·         Prepares the section’s operating and capital budget forecasts to support the division’s mandate and objectives

·         Responsible for operational contracts associated with construction activities at the landfill, compost facility, HHW depot and container facility, closed landfills and Landfill Gas Operations

·         Oversees and manages, consulting engineering assignments, for environmental studies, capital projects and other related programs

·         Prepares proposals regarding potential landfill site improvements and harmonization of operations

·         Interface with Corporate Senior Management, elected officials, and customers as necessary to support all projects, departmental programs and strategic objectives.

·         Facilitates various liaisons, advisory, joint committees and public meetings.  Coordinates and conducts presentations and discussions on all public meetings committees on Waste Management.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.
