Summary:
Meningococcal infections are caused by the bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis. Severe infections are rare. However, the bacteria can cause serious infection of the covering of the brain (meningitis) or blood infection (septicaemia). The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends immunization for people at increased risk of meningococcal group A, C, Y and W-135 infections.
