Halton continues to attract, retain and engage family physicians

Release Date: Jun 21, 2018

On June 20, 2018, Halton Region shared highlights of its successful Physician Recruitment Initiative as part of the 2017 Year-End Report to Regional Council. In 2017, the Initiative supported 17 new family physicians as they established full-time practices in Halton. Since its inception in 2002, Halton’s Physician Recruitment Initiative has helped bring 293 new family physicians to Halton region.

“Through our physician engagement program, the Halton Region Health Department connects prospective family physicians with opportunities in the community, provides educational events and supports physicians in maintaining their practices in Halton,” said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “This program ensures residents have continued access to the medical services they need which supports the health and well-being of all residents.”

Halton Region also partners with the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre, a clinical teaching unit that began training family medicine residents in June 2011. More than 50 per cent of the medical residents who completed their training through the Halton McMaster program have continued to practise in the region.

“The Region’s Physician Recruitment efforts continue to ensure Halton residents have access to a family doctor, today and in the future,” said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. “This Initiative helps us build and develop relationships with local physicians, foster a culture of learning and education about current public health topics and strengthens the Halton Region Health Department’s reputation as a trusted source of information to support physicians and the health of the community.”
