Halton Region improves access to water testing for private well owners in Georgetown and Acton
Release Date: Mar 17, 10

The Halton Region Health Department is pleased to announce one new location for well water sample bottle pick up and drop off and two new locations for well water sample bottle pick up only.

The new pick-up and drop-off well water depot is located at the Halton Hills Civic Centre, 1 Halton Hills Drive in Georgetown. The new pick-up only locations are at the Canadian Tire store in Georgetown and the Acton Home Hardware Store. Both the sample water bottles and testing for total coliform and E. coli are free.

“The health of Halton’s residents is a top priority,” said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “Being able to increase service accessibility without additional cost is a tremendous benefit to the community.”

Bacteriological contamination in well water can be easily detected through lab tests at the Public Health Laboratory. It is suggested that private well owners test their well water a minimum of three times a year to reduce their exposure to contaminated water and the serious health impacts that can occur. Residents can also sign up for free well water testing reminders. The reminders can be e-mailed or sent via Canada Post. To register, call Halton Region or visit www.halton.ca/testyourwellwater.

“The presence of bacteria such as total coliform and E. coli in well water can pose significant health risks,” said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. “Symptoms resulting from drinking contaminated water can range from mild to very severe.”

In addition to the new locations, there are seven other well water depots located throughout Halton where water sample bottles can be picked up and/or dropped off. The complete list of well water depots is below.
